The capitol is New Providence, often referred to as Nassau, the main city on the island. There are 700-plus islands and cays, over 18 key destinations, 35 of which are inhabited.
The Bahamas is a chain of islands, with over 18 key destinations to choose from each offering a different experiences. The Out Islands are those outside of New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport). The Out Islands are more laid back whereas Nassau and Grand Bahama are considered ‘City Islands’ as they are more build up with more commercial businesses.
The Bahamian Dollar ($BSD) is on par with the US Dollar ($USD) and interchangeable on the islands. Credit cards are accepted in many places but its best to always carry some cash with you, especially around the Out Islands. ATMs + PLUS and Cirrus are in banks on Nassau, Grand Bahama, and most major Out Islands. Using cash is advised around the islands but some place do accept credit cards.
North Americans visiting do not require an adaptor. The Bahamas has type a and b plugs and sockets, The standard voltage is 120 v and the standard frequency is 60 hz.

Casual summer wear can be worn during the day at any time of the year, but be sure to bring a jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings from December to February. Most hotels, restaurants, and casinos require jackets for men at night, especially in more cosmopolitan areas, such as Nassau & Paradise Island and Freeport.


Beachwear is inappropriate in churches, restaurants, and casinos. Away from the beach or the pool, you should cover your swimsuit with shorts or a long shirt when walking city streets. In more relaxed and remote areas, the dress code is more flexible.

Ensure that you pack sunblock, flip-flops, and your favorite swimsuit! The Bahamas is a subtropical region; dress for the islands.

The coldest month is December where the water is about 75°f-78°f (24°c).
Summer highs range from 80 to 90 °F (26 to 32 °C) and winter lows average a comfortable 70 °F (21 °C).
There is no precise ‘rainy season’ but there is an increased chance of precipitation during hurricane season – June to November.

Bus service (called jitneys) is available on several of the major islands, including Nassau and Grand Bahama. Rates vary depending on the route and the exact change is required. Bus stops are marked. On New Providence, the basic rate is $1.25 per person; areas outside the city of Nassau could cost up to $3.50. It usually runs from early morning (around 6:30 a.m.) until around 7:00 p.m.

You can find taxis located at most hotels and airports. You can call for a taxi or get one off the street on the main islands. Hotels, restaurants and bars can all call taxis for you too. The metered rates vary by island, but they are reasonable and set by law. Please note that surcharges often apply for more than two persons and extra luggage.

Car rentals are available on most islands, as well as scooter and bike rentals.
On the smaller islands, you can also rent golf carts.

 UBER is not available in The Bahamas.

You are required to clear Bahamas Immigration upon arriving in The Bahamas and after collecting your luggage from baggage claim you can transfer to your domestic flight. Your flight to the Out Islands are located in the Domestic Terminal; the recommended check-in time for local flights is 1 ½ hours before departure.

There are many tours and day trips to islands around The Bahamas which can be done by plane, boat or ferry.

UK rules apply in The Bahamas, which means driving on the left and be very careful on the roundabouts. Visitors can use their residence permit for up to three months and may also apply for an international driving licence.

Yes, you can bring your pet to The Bahamas, but you must prepare before you leave home. An import permit is required from the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources (Nassau) for all animals brought into the country. The permit is valid for one year from the date of issue.

Tipping is customary in The Bahamas, and you should tip according to the quality of service you receive. Bellboys and porters usually receive $1 per bag, while most other servers (waiters, taxis, etc.) receive 15%. Be advised that many establishments include the gratuity in the total.

Yes, the Royal Bahamas Police Force maintains a robust presence to ensure the safety of visitors and Bahamian residents. We encourage you to maintain awareness of your surroundings and valuables when in public areas, beaches, and pools, just as you would at home.

  • Only accept rides from licenced operators on land and sea, including taxis and watercraft operators, such as water taxis, jet skis, banana boats, speedboats, etc.
  • Do not swim alone and use caution if you choose to swim during the early morning or after dusk.
  • If you have medical issues that may affect your ability to participate in strenuous excursions, please consider before diving in.
  • When booking an excursion, work directly with your BahamasBNBs to find a trusted tour operator. It is not recommended to work with individuals who may approach you on the beach or street.
  • The purchase and usage of marijuana is illegal and enforced with strict penalties.
